The Chickasaw Indians were he original inhabitants of the area. Explorers such as Hernando DeSoto and La Salle traveled through received from the Chickasaws during their explorations. When the Memphis and Grenada railroad was built; it stimulated growth in the area. The railroad dropped off freight marked “Horn Lake” in the center of the area and then distributed through the area by horse and wagon. The freight stop was subsequently named “Horn Lake” and stores, cotton gins, a stockyard, black smith shops and gristmills were built near the tracks leading to the establishment of a community. Its first post office appeared around 1853. Their are still two from that early period standing today. The Walker Home built around 1844 was constructed of made of hand-hewn logs and bricks. The Octagonal Home built around the same time is a is a three-level, eight-sided house which epitomizes elegance for its day.
