SR 12 and SR 17 meet in the Southern part of town and run together until they part again to the North.
About the area
The Lexington area is where for many years the Choctaw Indians lived and hunted. To establish a county seat for Holmes county; the city of Lexington was founded around 1833 and incorporated 3 years later. The town was named for the Revolutionary War battleground in Lexington, Massachusetts. No fancy stuff here; the original courthouse was a log structure to later be replaced by a grand courthouse which was destroyed by fire in the early 1890's. A new courthouse was erected soon afterward and still stands to this day. The city went through the Civil war with very little damage. The city at one time was the home of the Central Mississippi Normal College and the Lexington Normal College which no longer exist.
