Belt City Court

Belt Court is located in Montana's Eighth judicial district. SR331 runs through the Northwestern part of Belt.

A native of Pennsylvania discovered large coal deposits along Belt creek around 1870. He and a partner established a coal mine here which found ready customers in the Great Northern railway and the Boston and Montana Refinery in Great Falls. As a result a town was started to house and supply the men who came from throughout the United States and Europe to work in the mine. This original coal mine owner and his wife established a stage station and hotel around 1885 at the site of the new settlement. Around 1894 the Anaconda Copper Mining company, the mine's new owner, brought significant changes to the town. The old jail building next to the foot bridge over Belt creek is the home of the Belt museum. The museums exhibits include a historic jail cell, a coal mine, town records and photos and the work of local artists. Each June the Professional Rodeo Cowboys association rodeo comes to Belt with events such as bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc, team roping, tie down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. A nice pancake breakfast at the Belt Fire Department hall will get you ready for the Hometown parade in downtown Belt.
