Although the Lewis and Clark expedition passed through here around 1804, no effort was made to start a settlement. From time to time the area was visited by a passing trapper or mountain man. That is until a man named Gibson came here around 1880 and began to plan a city. He put much effort in the planning with with everything from straight streets, minimum width of streets and the location of parks in the plan. Gibson and a railroad owner spent a lot of time developing the city and around 1884 settlement began. Today the city has over 55 parks and four aquatic centers as well as neighborhood pools. There are several annual events occurring here throughout the year; the Montana State Fair, Western Art Week, Ice Breaker Road Race and the Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals. There are also the Great Falls Municpal Band concerts every Wednesday evening in Gibson park from late June through mid August and minor league baseball at Centene Stadium.
