Hamilton is the second largest county (about 1800 sq.mi.) in New York by area, but has the smallest population, and the lowest population density of the state-just a few more than 5,000 residents live there year round. For perspective, Nassau County (on Long Island) has well over a million people on less than 1/4 the land. The suburban and partly rural Town of Guilderland NY has 35,000 in 60 square miles -- 7 times as many people in 1/30th the space.
It is completely inside the Adirondack State Park, and therefore is a beautifully scenic area: during the summer, it receives more than five times its normal population of vacationers and tourists! Winter brings some skiers too. Wonderful hiking, but be careful. |
