Chester began as two farms on the East and West sides of town. When yellow clay was discovered in the area, residents soon found that it was useful for making brick and china. It then became a significant natural resource and addition to the economy for the city. Barges and Ferries were a part of the freight on the Ohio river that regularly made stops at Chester. Tomlinson Run State Park, covering over 1300 acres, is located just South of Chester and has facilities for fishing, swimming and camping. If you are looking for a relaxing place to go for the afternoon or recreation on a smaller scale visit Chester City Park with its sports fields, playground equipment and picnic pavilions.
