| About the area |
Although it was not officially incorporated under the name New Haven until around 1935, originally known as New London, entrepreneurs from New Haven, Connecticut came here in the 1860's to build early salt furnaces along the Ohio River and renamed the town for their home city. As in other towns with salt furnaces in the area, this town benefited from the opening of nearby coal mines.
