The fork in the road where US 52 heads to the Southeast or to the Southwest is located at SR 80 in Gilbert.

Nearby R. D. Bailey lake is a dam on the Guyandotte river with the opportunity for boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, water sports and wildlife viewing and camping spots or RV spaces and a picnic area. Tours of the dam and intake structure can be taken from the visitor's center or you can make use of the viewing telescopes on the observation deck. The fisherman will find plenty of largemouth, smallmouth, striped bass and channel catfish in the lake. The woods provide an opportunity to hunt for small game such as rabbits and turkey in-season. There are three group shelters each with a playground, flush toilets, drinking water and grassy space for sports and proximity to shore fishing areas. The Town of Gilbert along with the Larry Joe Harless Community Center, Gilbert Development Company and the re-enactment groups 22nd Virginia Infantry and Hale’s Battery of Artillery sponsor the annual Civil War re-enactment “Skirmish on the River” in late April. The re-enactors set up their camp and provide teaching stations of what the grounds were like during the Civil War. These stations are the cooking tent, artillery run and field packing tent. The battles take place in the field above the Community Center and there is a presentation of Special Bluegrass music.
