Broadback, Grape and Middle islands of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge are accessible from St. Marys. The refuge was established to protect, conserve, and restore habitat for wildlife native to the river's floodplain. Several recreational activities are allowed on the refuge such as Auto touring, boating, fishing, hiking and hunting. Middle Island which is bridge-accessible from St. Marys has a a walking trail. The trail leads to a viewing blind that overlooks a small wetland which attracts waterbirds such as ducks, geese, and shorebirds.
