Around 1762, two brothers were the first Englishmen to set foot in present-day Upshur County after they deserted their post at Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh) and arrived in present-day Upshur County around 1762, settling just a short distance from present-day Buckhannon. One of the brothers returned to the South Branch River settlements for supplies around 1765 and his brother returned to the Buckhannon area around 1769. The county's first post office was established in Buckhannon around 1804. During the Summer of 1861, Buckhannon became an important staging area for the Union Army. The annual West Virginia Strawberry festival is held each May to promote the strawberry harvest. There is much to enjoy at this festival from the carnival to the band competition, car show or strawberry auction. There is also a quilt show and photography show. huge block parties of entertainment on Main Street are held on the first two successive evenings.
