About the area
Attalla was originally the site of an Indian village which was of considerable importance during the Creek War. The population has grown from 300 residents at the time of incorporation in the 1870's to about 6500. In the latter part of the 1880’s, Attalla was a significant iron ore shipping point in the state. At first wagons and then small dummy trains were used to haul the ore from the mines to the loading area for the Alabama Great Southern Railroad. Later the The East Alabama & Cincinnati Railroad was constructed through Attalla and went on as far as Gadsden. The major portion of Camp Siebert, a replacement training center for the Chemical Warfare Service by the Department of Defense between 1942 and 1944, was located in Attalla.
