About the area |
Lowell was originally named Bloomington and sat along Old Wire Road in the spot where the Butterfield Stagecoach stopped. Perhaps the town was not so lovingly called Mudtown because traveler's wagons got stuck in the muck. Rumor has it that townspeople added water to the road to make it muddy so that the stagecoaches would have to stay longer. When the town was moved about one mile West next to the new Frisco railroad it was renamed Lowell. The tale of the mud lives on and the city of Lowell annually holds Mudtown Days in June at Ward Nail park. The day is filled with the Mud Buddy run, Youth Talent contest, a carnival, Bingo, A horseshoe tournament, a car show, fireworks and lots of live musical entertainment and food.
