| About the area |
The name of the city has two sources; it is derived from the name of early settlers to the area named Fitzgerald and the German word Gerald which is "Strong with Spear". In the first decade of the century it was incorporated as a village and in the 1940's, by special vote of the people in the city became a fourth class city. The Rock Island Railroad runs through the city. The city has one municipal park in the Southeast corner with plenty of grass and a small lake.
