Max lies near the border with Ward county. When some people thought the Soo railroad line would be laying track North of Garrison by Elbow lake to obtain water for their steam engines; they began building homes and businesses at the site. Then around 1906 a town was plotted and given the name Max. The town has three parks; Max City park and Centennial park, both of which have picnic shelters and playground equipment and the Max RV park. The Schmidt Mini-Museum displays antiques and other collections representative of the early days in Max. Two annual events held in this town are the community Steak Fry and dance and the Welcome Summer Solstice Celebration both of which are sponsored by the Max Civic club.
