Turnersville is a census-designated area in Washington Township. It is believed that Turnersville got it's name from the Turner family which was one of the early settlers in the region. A century ago, Washington Township had nearly 200 farms and was largely rural. Today, the "town center" around the town square in the heart of the township and the other center located around Route 42 are major economic pillars. The township is a family community and a self-sufficient unit. Routes 42, 168, 534 and 555 and Atlantic City Expressway traverse this township. An unusual fact about the township is that it has the smallest cemetery in the state with only 4 graves.
