Settled back in the early 1800s as it is today, after losing the territories of Town of Denmark and the Town of Pinckey. Like a masterpiece, the Lewis county seat was formed from Lowville, Champion and Mexico (the Handle portion). Blessed with fine water sources, delightful flora and scenic views, this was the home of the Mohawk valley. The faith and history of this town treasure the St. Patrick's Church and the Free Communion Baptist church. Since this town does not have any business center or village, the churches represented the town meeting point.
