| About the area |
Brookings lies at the southernmost point of western Oregon. Azalea State park covers over 30 acres and is populated by native azalea plants which go back to the early 1800's. When the park started to go bad; volunteers combined their efforts to build walkways and planting areas, clean up debris and plant rhododendrons and bulbs. In addition to a play area for children and other recreational areas there is a band shell which hosts summer concerts. Harris Beach State park, on the Northwest of Brookings along US Hway 101, includes Bird Island, the largest island off the Oregon coast, which is a National Wildlife Sanctuary and breeding site. Brookings State airport, located to the Northeast of Brookings and has one runway over 2500 feet in length.
