Sutton Municipal Court

SR 4 comes into Sutton as Main street and IS 79 lies in the Northwest corner.

The first settler to the area came towards the end of the of 18th century and soon others followed him. In the first decade of the 19th century another settler built his homestead at the confluence of Granny's Creek and the Elk River. This later was the area of downtown Sutton. Several others followed him to the area and the village of Suttonville was laid out in the 1830's. They were located between two major transportation routes and in the 1840's the Weston to Gauley Bridge Turnpike, which included a wire suspension bridge across the Elk River at Sutton, was chartered. Portions of this bridge still remain. Sutton was deeply involved in the Civil War and Confederate soldiers burned most of the downtown. However Sutton was slowly rebuilt until the timber industry in the region developed and the town's economy grew from 1890 to 1920.
