About the area

Native Americans knew of the benefits of the warm spring mineral waters in this city long before Europeans arrived in the New World. On a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson's father around 1747 the area was known as Medicine Springs. George Washington's family and friends laid out the town and named the streets incorporating the town around 1776 as Bath after the spa city in England. The town and its surrounding area are known as Berkeley Springs. George Washington's Bathtub celebration held every March celebrates the country’s only outdoor monument to presidential bathing. The stone tub is located in Berkeley Springs State park. The weekend of this event features Mount Vernon peanut soup, dollar sales and local history including the traditional reading from Washington’s papers
