Sandy hills are easily find over the surface of Smithfield, which remained uncultivated for quite a long time. Today the town is still receiving its mail through Canastota district because of its isolation from railroads and canals. Cheese manufacturing is the most important financial activity on this territory which adopted it on the middle 1800's at Peterboro.
Great history here, as abolitionist Gerrit Smith and his father Peter Smith (who is perhaps the source of the names here) were centered in these parts. Strong connections, of course, to Daniel Cady, Peter's brother-in-law. |
