| About the area |
The village has a festival to commemorate Peppermint Day. This happens in Mid-July and the purpose is to remember this area for their once great crop of Peppermint oil. The Hotchkiss oil company made peppermint oil in the 1800's and produced a great deal of the peppermint oil used in the U.S. at that time. In 1989 they started having a parade and fireworks to rediscover the man and his company. Today Hotchkiss is still remembered and festivities draw crowds from all over New York. Village has some Erie Canal action going on as well. This is the county seat and home of the 1854 county courthouse.
