| About the area |
In the last part of the nineteenth century, Coquille became a a boomtown due to the anticipated arrival of the railroad. This part of its history is recalled by the Gay ‘90s Festival in May. The railroad eventually chose another route. However the economy of the town was sustained by the wealth of forest as well as farming, dairying and cattle ranching. Now days the economic landscape here is predominantly made up of cattle and dairy operations. Reminiscent of the good old days are the old-time melodramas, with their villains and heroes/heroines, presented every summer weekend at Coquilles Sawdusters Theater.
