Originally occupied by Native Americans, 11 mounds can be found in residential areas of the city. For his military service the government granted the land here to George Washington, however it was named for the woman who inherited the land from Washington. The main economy of Dunbar was based on farming until the second decade of the 20th century when the opening of glass and bottling plants in the city heralded the beginnings of an industrial economy. Among the parks in Dunbar two stand out for their significance. Three large restored stone walk-in wine cellars, dating to pre-Civil War, still stand in Wine Cellar Park which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The park also has a large lake and picnic facilities. Along with a multi-purpose recreation building, there is an Olympic-size pool in Dunbar City Park.
