Livingston is named after Robert Livingston, the 1st Lord of Livingston Manor, a key figure in the early days of New York. The town has a somewhat odd shape stretching west in its northwest corner to get a squib of Hudson River shoreline between Greenport and Germantown. US 9 runs north-south through the bulk of the town, with Route 82 and Route 9G also carrying significant volume.
