| About the area |
The first settlers to this area were from Southern states who traveled here in the Spring of 1857 with the objective of growing cotton where there was plenty of water and flat, good agricultural land South of the Virgin River. The first year at the area they selected was disastrous with illness and the lack of good water taking its toll on the settlers. However after building several dams each of which was destroyed by floods in the years between 1857 and 1859; a successful dam, the Washington Fields Dam, was built around 1891. A cotton factory was erected around 1865. Washington City has a huge community center in the center of which is Utah's largest indoor aquatic complex. This place has something for everyone. It has meeting and party rooms, a day care center, gymnastics gymnasium in addition to 3 full gymnasiums, a cardio room, a weight room, a climbing wall, outdoor picnic area with grills. and a running track.
