About the area |
The town owes its existence to the completion of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad and a depot in the area about 1892. The city was built around the depot which around 1915 and from thence forward was the largest shipping point for cattle in West Virginia until the 1920's when it was the largest for the entire Baltimore and Ohio East of the Mississippi. In the Watters Smith Memorial State park you can find a pioneer homestead restoration and the Living History museum. A descendant of Watters Smith bequeathed the late 1700's farm of his to the state park system to preserve the heritage of early West Virginia in a pioneer homestead restoration at this park. A log cabin similar to the original was brought to the site and reconstructed. The Smith family home, circa 1876 has been restored as a museum and many early farm artifacts are houses in an additional living history museum. The park also has picnic areas and a walking trail.
