Salem was founded around 1792. It is the home of Salem International University, the Salem Apple festival and Butter Festival and Fort New Salem. The university which is over 100 years provides courses in Business, Education, Information Technology and Criminal Justice which lead to the Associate, Bachelor and Graduate degrees. The university hosts the free outdoor movie series this summer on the campus lawn. The Salem Apple festival is held at the end of each September and of course features demonstrations of old fashion apple butter making demonstrations of old fashion apple butter making, butter making and apple pie baking contests. In addition there is live entertainment daily, fireworks, food, crafts, apple parade, quilt show, 5k run, bicycle poker ride, celebrity auction, pet show-off, talent show, car show, and horseshoe pitching and cornhole tournaments. Fort New Salem Fort is a village of over 18 relocated log houses, some of them restored, which interpret the history, crafts and lifestyles of the area in an outdoor setting.
