About the area |
Land cultivated by the indians and the settlement before the Revolutionary war, constitute the history of this town. Per our local source, "the founder of the Mormon religion lived in Afton and started the first Mormon church there, before he was run of out of town and after he unsuccessfully tried walking on water on the Susquehanna River."
The Benton Family represented a very strong influence for the agriculture orientation back in the middle 1800's; their farms were located on the west side of the river and their fertile land attracted many settlers into the farming activity. The commercial area was also important for this town around the 1820's when residents from Delaware county opened the first stores in Afton. |
