If you were an explorer entering the Salt Lake valley, between the Wasatch Mountains and the Oquirrhs, you might have encountered the Northern Shoshone and Ute Indians in the area. These tribes were the descendants of the prehistoric Indians who inhabited the area. Settlement began with the arrival of the first Mormon wagon train around 1847. These settlers built a fort at and surveyed Salt Lake City. There are now over 70 county parks in the Salt Lake valley. The county also operates approximately 18 swimming pools in the county at various locations. The Salt Lake County Sheriff's office is represented in individual horseback team events, and drill competitions by the Salt Lake County Mounted Posse.
